Coos County will soon have nine syringe disposal boxes

Huge burden lifted off our community.

COOS COUNTY — By the end of summer, the Coos County Syringe Disposal Plan will be in full swing.

Coos County went from having no syringe disposal opportunities for the public to having nine boxes ordered for people in a matter of two months. The first four boxes, where used syringes can be safely dropped off, are to be installed at separate locations throughout the Bay Area at the end of August.  Read more…

SOUTH COAST — In the local battle against the opioid epidemic, Kate Frame is the linchpin in bringing solutions together.

Advanced Health was approached by the Oregon Health Authority, asking if it would facilitate a grant from the Center of Disease Control. According to Frame, this is not the type of grant Advanced Health has ever administered in the past, but once it saw the local work being done on the opioid crisis, it agreed. Read more…

COOS COUNTY — In the past year, county health care, first responders and an entire community banded together to turn around the opioid epidemic on the southern Oregon coast.

Naloxone is a life-saving drug used to reverse an opioid overdose and before last year, there were virtually zero in the hands of community members. Now, naloxone is everywhere and already being used to save lives.  Read more…

OHSU Releases Opioid Reduction Survey Stats for Coastal Oregon

Oregon Health and Science University recently released survey statistics regarding opioid reduction efforts in southwestern Oregon.

The survey was designed to evaluate regional opioid harm reduction efforts, demonstrate areas of progress from 2018-2019, identify themes in opioid safety topics, and recognize barriers and opportunities for continued opioid safety work. Read More...

LADPC holds substance misuse summit

Coos County’s Local Alcohol and Drug Planning Committee for a substance misuse summit.

Like minded community organizations to review data and create a collaborative plan to further combat substance misuse in our community. A variety of community partners attended the summit, there were representatives from Bay Area Hospital, Coos Health and Wellness, Advanced Health, Overdose Aware, Bay Area First Step, the Coquille Tribe, the Confederated Tribes, and two of the Coos County commissioners among others. Read More...

Coos County sees higher overdose-reversing prescriptions than state average

Naloxone is being prescribed more locally than the state average

COOS COUNTY — More of the overdose-reversing drug, naloxone, is being prescribed in Coos County than throughout the rest of the state.

In Coos County, naloxone is being prescribed at a rate of .61 per 1,000 residents, while the statewide average is .53 per 1,000 residents. This means 39 people received a naloxone prescription in Quarter 3 of 2018, according to the Oregon Health Authority.  Read more…
